BACKGROUND - cw: parental death, suicide

Born in Scotland, not too far from Glasgow. Niven comes from a family where Psychics have popped up every so often. There's a great deal of superstition and old beliefs tied to it all. According to legends, the seventh son of a seventh son is fated to be a great healer. Niven, being the seventh son of a seventh son, found himself with the ability to heal as a child - and naturally, he and his family came to conclusion that he must be the fated healer after all. His father, while not a doctor, was brought up on old wives tales about medicine, was a firm believer in natural 'old remedies'. He owned a shop, one of those 'new age/holistic/old remedy' places and growing up, Niven was taught everything he knew. He gained extensive knowledge of plants, flowers - dabbling in so-called 'magic' and 'alchemy'.

Of course, none of those kinds of things are real. A lot of it is belief and superstitions. But Niven believed in them none the less. However, he decided to opt for a more lucrative and safe career choice - deciding to become a paramedic. It also meant he could get into the thick of things. He wanted to be at the front lines, he wanted to help people, he wanted to save people. His ability meshed well with his career choice - he had a natural affinity for the work. He was good at his job and he enjoyed it.

Until his mother got sick while he was in his mid-twenties. Cancer. And nothing Niven could do would make a blind bit of difference. He half-killed himself trying to heal her from it. Out of love for her son, wanting to spare him from injury, and maintain her own dignity - Niven's mother took her own life. She overdosed on her pain medication. Niven was the first to find her. While assured in a letter he wasn't to blame, her death proved too much of a massive failure for Niven to overcome and he blamed himself entirely. His brothers, in part, also blamed him in their own grief. But for Niven: What was the point in having his power when they wouldn't work when it mattered? What was the point in helping people when he couldn't help the one person who mattered most to him?

Ultimately, it drove a wedge in the family and he isolated himself from the rest of them. He quit his job as a paramedic. Told his 'destiny' to go fuck itself and decided he would simply bum around in his father's shop, taking over the business when his father retired with the help of his friend Kitty, a bull-headed young woman who wasn't afraid to kick her boss's arse when he spent his days wallowing.

While the relationships with his some of his brothers was largely strained, he did manage to reconcile with a couple of them. He decided to go visit his brother Callum, who has emigrated to Halifax, Nova Scotia with his dog, Bess. It was here, during this visit, when the flu broke out. His brother died. His brother's partner died. People in his brother's neighbourhood died. Everyone died. And there he was. Stuck. In Canada.

And then the dreams came.

PERSONALITY

At a first glance, Niven appears to be your typical Scotsman: he is dour, ill-tempered, tight-fisted and fond of a drink. While he is, to an extent, all of these things - it is largely a front to keep himself at arm's length from the world.

He's a complicated and contradictory man who barely knows himself any more and yet assures the world he is how he is. He's the shadow of his youth - bright, hopeful and ready to accept his fate to do great things; a man who has had his dreams crushed. A man who was brought up with superstitions and tales he believed in, that became his reality, his life. Years down the line, he still hurts - he's still stuck with his grief and his guilt; too busy ruminating and not moving forward.

He is a man who is trained in a job that he knows and does well - but has lost the love for. While there's no doubt he has talent, skill and competency - his medical training is forever a reminder of his own failures in his past and thus tries to avoid it like the plague (no pun intended) but will work with loathing and at times, apathy. He is reluctant, haunted by his mother's death and in turn, he has become avoidant and dismissive of who he's supposed to really be.

He's angry at himself, angry at the world - fuelled by his insecurities and trauma. He finds it easy to fall into stagnant cycles because it's what he knows and while they aren't healthy, it's hard to break from those habits. Loneliness and self-isolation has only twisted him further, making him prickly and difficult to deal with. It's easier to lash out, easier to push people around because it's better than addressing his hurts.

And yet he is a deeply sentimental and sensitive man. Largely hidden beneath all the roughness, it peeks out when it really counts. He can be charming and humorous, even gentle at times. He is loyal to those he knows, despite his rough-handed way of dealing with things. He hates to see pain, whether it be physical or emotional - down to compassionate side and a natural inclination (thanks to his ability) to heal others. He is a good man, deep down - whether he'll admit it or not - he's just lost his way.
